Podcast Review: Career Opportunities

Career Opportunities: The High-Tech Career Handbook with Douglas E. Welch

Format: Audio Column
Content: Technology Career commentary
Rating: 3 and a half stars
What I'm going to do: unsubscribe
Typical Length: 6 - 7 minutes

Douglas E. Welch writes a Career Opportunities column for ComputorEdge[sic.] This podcast is an audio version of the column read by Douglas.

This is a good example of purely informational podcasting. Douglas isn't out to amuse, but instead to impart information to the listener, and this he does well. Douglas's writing is easily accessible and concise, and his reading of his columns is clear and easily understood. His handling of the audio and production aspects of the podcast is competent; his intro/outro track is satisfactory and the fades well-handled and the balance of voice to music volume is nearly perfect.

Being in the IT world myself, a lot of the information Douglas talks about seems to be pretty obvious, but I expect that less experienced folks may find a lot of value in this 'cast, and as I expect that many of the podcast listeners right now are technically interested people who are not currently in the IT fields, this may be of interest to them.

My biggest complaint about the 'cast is the amount of content versus the amount of intro/outro information. In the 'casts I listened to, Douglas spent more than a minute and a half of his 6 minute podcast giving contact, publication, and sponsorship information. I understand that his columns aren't that long, and maybe I'm being a little hard on Douglas with this comment - I understand his desire to publicize his and his wife's work, but 25% of the podcast seems a long time to spend on that information.

Thanks for the review.

I, too, noticed the increasing length of the intro/outro and have reduced it significantly in these week's column.
